Jonny - Rondo, 0-1

Nice game in round 2. Jonny is a pretty strong program, and it was running on a massive 800 cpu cluster. From out of book, the scores looked rather drawish. Jonny took a very long 40 minute search out of book after a very slight fail low. After a couple moves, both programs said 0.00, and it remained that way for about 20 moves, for an hour or so. The game went into a drawn rook ending. We nearly agreed to a draw, except the TD was out of the room.

Rondo then went to about 0.12 pawns advantage. I thought it was just some random fluctuation, as it still looked drawn. Johannes (programmer of Jonny, and a very strong chess player) said it was drawn too. Jonny kept at 0.00, and Rondo bounced around, sometimes going back to 0.00. It started to very slowly rise, and eventually Jonny was shaken from 0.00. It still looked drawn, but black slowly got more and more of an edge. The game, which was so woefully boring, started to become quite suspenseful--I stopped walking around looking at the other games and stayed glued to the monitor.

Eventually Rondo had 2 passed pawns on the queenside versus Jonny's 3 passed pawns on the kingside, but Rondo's were slightly more advanced and had better rook support. I was also somewhat worried about a draw, since the end of Jonny's PV showed a line with a possible fortress for white. The scores were about -4, when all of a sudden Rondo found a mate in 24, and then found a shorter mate in 22. It was also playing without endgame tables (if you know what those are), which is rather unusual for a "professional" program. Those that know my preparation for this tournament will know that I am anything but a professional. :)

With perhaps a bit of luck, Rondo is now tied for first with Rybka, the favorite for the tournament. We'll see what happens with more games though.

Full diary of the day will come later, perhaps with some pictures as well! Right now Rondo is playing Thinker in the Software championship (limited hardware, other two rounds were unlimited hardware).
